January 2011 Event Reports (9)

Arisia 2011

Arisia, January 14-17, was in a new hotel this year, the Westin Waterfront in Boston. After spending a few years in the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, which was too small for Arisia, the Westin was a breath of fresh air. Instead of being crowded, small, and hot, the game room was large and spacious, with plenty of room, though a bit out of the way.

There were no formal demos scheduled for Looney Labs games, but I met with several other fans and we taught each other, and other…

Borders Demo for Zombie Fluxx

Borders Books is running a Family Game Night in all of their stores on three thursdays in January, and asked us to attend a few in our local area...   last night Andy and I played Zombie Fluxx at the Borders in White Flint Mall, Rockville MD.

Since this is a large chain and the corporate office was organizing the event, I was not surprised to find there was very little advertising for it in the local store. But they gave us a table in a great location and we had a lot of fun!  We…

Borders Game Night in Tukwila, WA

Borders is hosting game nights the month of January.  I demoed Zombie Fluxx at the South Center Mall location.  This is an interesting location because they have a lot of foot traffic, but mainly because they have a door from the parking garage where people just walk through the store to get to the mall.

I had great placement at the front of the store near the discounted items.  I was able to get three demo's.  My demo's didn't start happening until 6:30.  I was there until…

Game Night At Borders

On Thursdays this month most Borders book stores are having family game nights. My wife and I were running demos of some games for Steve Jackson Games at a Borders last Thursday. After the event was officially over we also ran a game of Zombie Fluxx with a group of about six players. All of them knew Fluxx, but about half were new to Zombie Fluxx. We will be doing similar events the next two Thursdays.

New Years Eve Party

This is a little late, but new years eve I was at a party with several local (Indianapolis) science fiction fan clubs. I had all of my pyramids with me. No one was interested in playing anything with them for the first part of the evening. They were playing a lot of other games. Sometime around 1:30 or so in the morning someone suggested Zendo. We got a game started with three of us who knew the game and two newbies. We played for about four hours I think. One of the new players left after a… Continue

Borders Game Night in Everett, WA

Borders is hosting game nights for the month of January in all their locations.  I demoed Zombie Fluxx at the Everett Mall Borders. The store's foot traffic was slow, but with the help of the manager I was placed in the young adults section. I demoed to two people.  I also talked to the staff and got them excited about the game.  I think if they game nights were more frequent that people would begin to schedule times to attend.

A Beginner's Guide to Pyramids

Although I’ve been playing Looney Labs card games for many years, it wasn’t until a little over two years ago that I stumbled into the world of Icehouse pyramids. Games like Fluxx, Chrononauts, and Aquarius eventually piqued my curiosity enough to discover more about this unique gaming company and its colorful baboushka-like pyramids.

After acquiring my first set of Treehouse I quickly became enamored.…
